ARGENTINA: Milei’s mastery over Macri

Never have elections to renew half of the seats in the City of Buenos Aires (Caba) legislature attracted so much interest or seen so many column inches expended on them as those that took place on 18 May. Even though neither of them were directly involved in the contest it was billed as a heavyweight tussle between Argentina’s President Javier Milei and former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), with the victor to be proclaimed as the undisputed champion on the right of the political spectrum. While this is a somewhat simplistic reduction of a complex contest that had other factors at play, it is fair to say that Milei and his far-right La Libertad Avanza (LLA) won and will be much strengthened for future electoral bouts, while Macri and his right-of-centre Propuesta Republicana (PRO) sustained a body blow.
