After 24 years as a member of the centre-right Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), the governor of Rio Grande do Sul state, Eduardo Leite, has left the party and joined the Partido Social Democrático (PSD), a big tent party which has grown in influence since it was founded in 2011. It is no secret that Leite is considering running in the 2026 presidential race, and it is likely that he sees the PSD as a better vehicle for his ambitions than the PSDB. However, the founder and party president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab, has not revealed who the party will back in the next year’s election.
