BELIZE: Ruling PUP sweeps to victory

Belize’s ruling People’s United Party (PUP) won an emphatic victory in a snap general election called by Prime Minister John Briceño on 12 March, capitalising on a schism in the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), which presented two competing lists. The PUP won 26 of the 31 seats in the House of Representatives, repeating its margin of victory in the last general election in 2020. It also won the popular vote, taking 66% of total ballots cast.
