MEXICO: ‘El Mayo’ seeks return

Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García, the imprisoned co-founder of Mexico’s Cártel de Sinaloa, has once again issued a letter from his jail cell in the US that has sparked controversy in Mexico. In his latest epistle, sent to the Mexican consulate in New York on 21 February, Zambada asks to be returned to Mexico due to the way his arrest in the US was orchestrated. He warns of a possible impact on Mexican sovereignty if his request is not heeded, suggesting that foreign governments may think it is permissible to arrest Mexicans and transfer them to US jurisdiction, as he claims happened to him. In this way, he is playing up to a major concern of President Claudia Sheinbaum – sovereignty – at a time when tensions around potential US intervention in Mexico are running high.
