BRAZIL: Inflation concerns weigh on government

If President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva runs for re-election in Brazil’s presidential race in 2026, the problem most likely to hinder his potential ambition would be high inflation. On 10 January the national statistics institute (Ibge) posted an annual inflation rate of 4.83% for 2024 – above the upper limit of the 3.0% +/-1.5 target range set by the central bank (BCB).
