EL SALVADOR: Government hints at relaxation of state of emergency

El Salvador’s draconian state of emergency, which has led to mass incarcerations and a dramatic fall in mara street gang violence since it was introduced in 2022, could be relaxed, the government led by President Nayib Bukele has suggested. But restoring constitutional rights could be a complicated process.
