GUATEMALA: Former president implicated in another corruption case

Guatemala’s government led by anti-corruption reformer President Bernardo Arévalo is seeking to bring a criminal complaint against former president Alejandro Giammattei (2020-2024), over a corruption case involving one of his close allies, the former head of the national electrification institute (Inde), Melvin Quijivix Vega. The move against Giammattei, who was blacklisted by the US three days after leaving office in January [WR-24-02], is the latest attempt by the Arévalo administration to deliver on its core pledge to dismantle the so-called ‘pacto de corruptos’ network of institutional corruption. As with other efforts, the alignment of key institutions, such as the judiciary and attorney general’s office, with the ‘pacto’ cast major doubt on the government’s chances of success.
