MEXICO: Spain spat marks Sheinbaum’s early days

Claudia Sheinbaum made history on 1 October, becoming the first woman to be sworn in as president of Mexico. Heads of state and representatives from nations across the region and the world attended her inauguration. However, one country was conspicuous in its absence: Spain. A royal snub in response to an ongoing diplomatic spat led to Spain’s government announcing that it would not send any representative to the event. This means Sheinbaum’s government has got off on the wrong foot with one of Mexico’s most important commercial allies.
