COLOMBIA: The battle of El Plateado

The small town of El Plateado, in Colombia’s south-western Cauca department, had not been under government control for the past six years, according to Defence Minister Iván Velásquez. That changed on 12 October when the armed forces launched a major military operation to seize the town from the Carlos Patiño unit of the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) – an alliance of dissident units from the demobilised Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group.
