BRAZIL: Scandal topples human rights minister

Since taking office in January 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has made six changes to his cabinet. The changes last year were made to appease congressional allies, but the latest change was brought about by a sexual harassment scandal. On 6 September Lula dismissed the minister for human rights and citizenship, Silvio Almeida, who faces allegations of harassing several women, including the racial equality minister, Anielle Franco. Almeida was replaced by state deputy Macaé Evaristo.
