Thousands of supporters and allies of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) joined him on Brazil’s Independence Day (7 September) for a demonstration on the Avenida Paulista, one of the main roads of São Paulo. Among the rallying cries of the Bolsonarista crowd was impeachment of supreme court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered the suspension of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) the previous week. At the rally Bolsonaro also backed calls to grant amnesty to the radical right-wing rioters convicted for participating in the attack on the seats of government in Brasília on 8 January 2023.
