BRAZIL: Local election campaigns kick off

Earlier this month Brazil’s political parties confirmed candidates to run in the municipal elections this October, and on 16 August the campaigning period officially commenced. National media attention has heightened on the race for the mayorship of Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, which is expected to be a bitter contest between the candidates endorsed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023).
