In brief: Sheinbaum names new social security head

*Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the current mayor of Mexico City (CDMX), Martí Batres, will head up the federal public workers’ social security institute (ISSSTE) when her government takes office on 1 October. Sheinbaum stated that Batres would also oversee FOVISSSTE, the housing fund of the ISSSTE in this role. Sheinbaum has said that a reform of the law governing the ISSSTE would be prioritised in her government in order to respond to demands made by teachers for better pensions. The announcement comes after Sheinbaum announced that Zoé Robeldo will keep his post as head of Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS), where he has been since 2019, in her government, while Alejandro Svarch, the current head of the federal sanitary protection agency (Cofepris), will head up the IMSS-Bienestar healthcare system, which provides free medical services to those without social security.
