BRAZIL: Lula approves green hydrogen regulations

During a visit to Ceará state on 2 August, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promulgated a bill approved by congress in July to create a regulatory framework for the production and distribution of low-carbon hydrogen fuel. Lula hailed hydrogen production as a means to boost the economy of Ceará and other states in the northeast and affirmed Brazil’s commitment to transition away from fossil fuels, but media commentators and industry experts have highlighted potential environmental risks and challenges facing the so-called ‘green’ hydrogen sector.
