BRAZIL: Crime figures highlight persistent security challenges

Homicides in Brazil fell in the first year of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s current term, according to the latest figures released by public security think thank Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP). Despite the encouraging decline in murders nationwide, the FBSP’s annual report highlighted other security challenges, such as police lethality and prison overcrowding.
