BRAZIL: Tensions rise over cannabis decriminalisation

Conservative lawmakers railed against the supreme court (STF) on 25 June, as justices of Brazil’s top court formed a majority in favour of decriminalising the possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal consumption. While the STF has reached a ruling that establishes a legal interpretation to distinguish between recreational cannabis use and drug trafficking, prominent members of congress, such as the senate president, Rodrigo Pacheco, have reiterated their arguments that setting drug laws is the prerogative of the legislature, not the judiciary.
