BRAZIL: Pantanal faces unprecedented outbreak of wildfires

Eduardo Riedel, the governor of Mato Grosso do Sul state, declared an emergency on 24 June in response to the rise in forest fires in the Pantanal tropical wetlands. The federal government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has also pledged to support the state’s response to the environmental crisis. June normally marks the earlier stages of the dry season in the Pantanal biome of south-western Brazil, but this year climate experts and authorities noted that the period of intense fires came earlier than expected and that the fires are stronger.
