PERU: Government acknowledges failures in crime fight

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte declared last September that tackling insecurity was her top priority. On 3 June, however, Interior Minister Juan José Santiváñez acknowledged that there had been shortcomings in the fight against organised crime, which he blamed on structural issues in the police and attorney general’s office. Santiváñez’s comments came days after he announced the replacement of the national police leadership.
