COLOMBIA: Peace processes hit rocky ground

Colombia’s government announced this week that it will begin peace negotiations with Segunda Marquetalia, a dissident group from the demobilised Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas. On paper this might look like a boost for President Gustavo Petro’s overarching objective of ‘total peace’ but legal uncertainty surrounds the talks. The peace process with the other group of Farc dissidents, the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), meanwhile, is in disarray, while that with the country’s second main guerrilla group, Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), has stalled.
