BRAZIL: Congress approves tax on e-commerce giants

Brazil’s senate approved legislation on 5 June which proposes imposing an import tax on cheap items purchased from international e-commerce and fast fashion companies. Brazilian retailers and industry groups have long claimed that foreign competitors enjoy unfair advantages and exploit tax loopholes, although raising taxes on online shopping is also a politically contentious issue, which has exposed divisions among Brazilian authorities.
