BRAZIL: Cerrado ranks as most deforested biome

MapBiomas, a Brazilian environmental monitoring initiative run by academics, NGOs, and private companies, released its 2023 annual deforestation report on 28 May, which showed an overall drop in deforestation from 2022. However, while the government’s efforts to protect the Amazon rainforest appear to be paying off, the latest figures highlighted the continued threats to the Cerrado biome, which overtook the Amazon as Brazil’s most deforested biome.
