Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel has blamed the tightening of the US “blockade” for the “difficult situation” endured by Cuba in obtaining basic products on the list of subsidised rations. The Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) government is responding to protests over shortages that broke out in various cities on 17 March [WR-24-11] with a different approach. Just days later, on 20 March, Díaz-Canel launched a new programme ‘Desde la Presidencia’, broadcast on Youtube and designed to bring the Cuban leader closer to the people, even if familiar foes – counterrevolutionaries and US policies – were blamed.
