*Fernando Fondevila, the CEO and general director of the Panama tourism promotion fund (Promtur), a grouping of tourism businesses, has said that the country is expecting some 2.9m visitors in 2024 (which includes tourists as well as those who stay at least a night or several hours in the country). This would be up from 2.5m visitors in 2023. He was widely cited by the local media as expressing hopes that the 2.9m figure would translate into some US$1.8bn in spending in 2024, up from earnings from tourism of US$1.7bn in 2023.
