PERU: Clash of powers intensifies

Two magistrates sitting on Peru’s judicial council (JNJ) who were impeached by congress have been reinstated in their positions following a judicial ruling this week. Congressional legislators, who voted to impeach judges Inés Tello and Aldo Vásquez [WR-24-10], refused to accept defeat and will appeal the ruling. The power struggle comes against the backdrop of overwhelming public rejection of all three branches of government, according to a survey published this week.
