Foreign policy: Milei’s shift to the right
In foreign policy, the new government has begun a significant shift to the right. In its first days in office, it declined an invitation to join the BRICS group of emerging economies, which includes China and Russia, and which often presents itself as a mouthpiece for the Global South. In its place Milei has signalled a desire to align his country more closely with the United States and Israel. Alejandro Rascovan, a professor at Universidad Nacional de San Martin, is critical of this shift. He says the Buenos Aires government is pursuing an ideological approach to Israel in the middle of the Gaza war; that it is gambling on a Donald Trump victory in the US presidential elections in November this year; and that it is expressing “disdain” for Brazil, a traditional ally of Argentina.
