The federal ministry of indigenous peoples announced on 19 January that the national guard (‘Força Nacional’) would be deployed to Paraná state, in the south of Brazil, to provide security for the Avá Guaraní indigenous community. The indigenous peoples’ ministry had requested the deployment in December, but it was not until after a group of cattle ranchers opened fire on members of the community on 10 January that more authorities began to heed the warnings about the threats facing the community.
