MEXICO: Mounting challenges for MC’s Álvarez Máynez
The presidential candidacy of federal deputy Jorge Álvarez Máynez of the leftist opposition Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), is facing various challenges. Days after the party revealed its pick, the centrist opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), part of the main Fuerza y Corazón por México opposition coalition, filed a complaint about Álvarez Máynez’s candidacy before the national electoral institute (INE). This, along with criticisms from within the MC, forms part of a wider context of difficulties facing the young candidate.
