In early January Honduras’s security minister, Gustavo Sánchez, boasted that there were 631 fewer homicides in 2023 compared with 2022, to total 3,030. This gives a rate of 31.09 per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 38.14 per 100,000 in 2022. The leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro has seized on this as a sign of success regarding its security policy which has included implementing a state of exception since late 2022 [SSR-23-01], involving a partial suspension of constitutional rights and a military deployment.
