Chilean voters have once again rejected a new constitution in a national referendum. If the rejection of the draft constitution put to the public in a referendum in September 2022 constituted a significant setback for President Gabriel Boric, the rejection of the draft constitution on 17 December 2023 was a setback for the right-wing opposition. The first, crafted by a left-wing majority, was widely viewed as too radical; the second, by a right-wing majority, too reactionary. Both elevated ideological conviction over the pragmatic compromise that the majority of Chileans appear to favour.
