ARGENTINA: Milei makes audacious bid for more power

President Javier Milei has wasted no time in throwing the gauntlet down to congress. Milei is seeking legislative powers to issue decrees on economic, financial, social, and security matters to confront “a national emergency” until the end of 2025, with a possible extension for another two years, which, if granted, would cover his entire four-year term. This brazen bid for more power forms just a small part of a gargantuan bill containing hundreds of articles ranging from reforms to the penal code to control street protests and authorisation to privatise 41 state companies to ‘labour flexibilisation’ and changes to the electoral law. Days beforehand, Milei issued a decree of necessity and urgency (DNU) deregulating the economy and striking down over 300 laws. The powerful trade union movement took legal action to block part of the DNU and announced a general strike for later this month.
