MEXICO: US celebrates further blow to Los Chapitos
Mexico’s security forces captured another key member of Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO), on 22 November. The arrest of Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas ‘El Nini’, allegedly the faction’s head of security, comes just over two months after another senior member of Los Chapitos, Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of the imprisoned Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, was extradited to the US. The US administration of President Joe Biden has praised Mexico for its efforts in capturing Pérez, indicating the importance the US is placing on dismantling Los Chapitos - which it claims is a major player in the illicit fentanyl trade - and the pressure that Mexico is under to do so.
