Nicaragua’s First Lady and Vice President Rosario Murillo has carried out a major purge of the judiciary in recent weeks, resulting in hundreds of dismissals, according to independent media outlets such as Confidencial. The changes in the judiciary, a key tool in the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government’s unremitting crackdown on dissent, has been attributed to a power struggle between factions within the FSLN loyal to Murillo and to President Daniel Ortega [WR-12-13].
