BRAZIL: Lula grants land rights to more quilombola communities

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has continued its efforts to support Afro-Brazilian ‘quilombola’ communities, the descendants of slaves who escaped and established their own rural settlements. On 20 November Lula signed decrees which granted full or partial land rights to five communities, amid a series of other decrees aimed at supporting Afro-Brazilians.
