COLOMBIA: Peace process on the rocks, again

Another week, another twist in the fortunes of President Gustavo Petro’s beleaguered peace plans. Just three weeks after signing a ceasefire agreement with the government, the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) alliance of dissident units of the demobilised Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) announced on 5 November that it was suspending its participation in peace negotiations. At the same time, tensions were flaring between the government and the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group over its kidnapping of the footballer Luis Díaz’s parents, which Petro said had endangered the ELN’s peace process.
