MEXICO: Gov’t clashes with mining giant over toxic spill

On 12 October, Mexico’s Environment Minister Maria Luisa Albores announced the government had filed a lawsuit for criminal damages against mining giant Grupo México for the 2014 toxic spill in the Sonora and Bacanuchi rivers, in Sonora state. She said that the government, which filed the lawsuit on 17 August, was suing the company because the spill was the result of negligence rather than an accident. Grupo México’s stock fell by over 2% shortly after the announcement.
