HAITI/REGION: Caricom members join Haiti security mission

On 2 October the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) authorised the deployment of an international security mission to help Haiti’s police force in the battle against gang violence. Key members of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) are to join the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission which is to be led by Kenya. The mission is to control the gang violence and restore security, but the underlying reason for the strong Caricom involvement is not difficult to establish: Haiti is the source of over 50% of all migrants in the region, which is struggling to absorb them.
