MEXICO: Migration challenges mount
The governments of Mexico and the US held the third annual High-Level Security Dialogue (HLSD) on 5 October. The issue of irregular migration was included on the agenda for the first time – previous HLSDs had focused exclusively on human trafficking rather than irregular migration more widely. This was indicative of the size of the challenge that migration currently poses for both countries, with a surge in migrant numbers in September and October putting authorities on both sides of the border under increasing pressure to manage flows.
