COLOMBIA: Second attempt at peace talks with EMC dissidents

Peace talks between the Colombian government and the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), the largest grouping of dissident units of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group, got off to a fresh start on 16 October, five months after an initial ceasefire collapsed in May. Whilst the EMC insists that its calls for a negotiated demobilisation are sincere, scepticism regarding its intentions was fuelled by a string of deadly attacks carried out by the dissidents in the period between the latest ceasefire being announced and coming into force.
