In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate drops in yearly terms

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new figures which show that the unemployment rate stood at 2.9% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – in September, equating to 1.8m people. According to Inegi, this is down 0.5 percentage points, or 234,000 fewer people, than in September 2022. In monthly terms, the unemployment rate experienced no changes, although the rate of underemployment was up 0.2 percentage points to 8.2% of the employed population. According to Inegi, the number of people in Mexico’s economically active population who were employed in September 2023 equalled 59.1m, up 1.6m on the same month of 2022.
