MEXICO-REGION: Regional migration summit provides few answers

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador hosted representatives from 10 Latin American nations on 22 October for a regional migration summit in the city of Palenque, Chiapas state. The summit focused heavily on the role that US sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela, whose presidents attended the meeting, play in the migration crisis. The focus on this – without any mention of the political repression and human rights abuses taking place in those countries – could raise tensions between Mexico and the US administration of President Joe Biden, which was notably not invited to the summit. Rights groups are also unlikely to be satisfied with the outcomes of the summit, which they had viewed as an opportunity for comprehensive regional cooperation on migration.
