BRAZIL: Rio shaken by paramilitary gang violence

The public transport network of Rio de Janeiro suffered its worst arson attack in a single day on 23 October, with at least 35 buses, a train, and other vehicles set ablaze. Authorities have blamed the attack on the paramilitary gangs known as ‘milícias’, powerful criminal organisations which control large swathes of territory in the city’s favelas.
