Former president Juan Orlando Hernández (Partido Nacional, PN, 2014-2022) and his predecessor, Porfirio Lobo (PN, 2010-2014), are among eight former top officials to have been indicted for corruption. The charges are likely to be welcomed by President Xiomara Castro and her leftist ruling Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) which won the November 2021 election on a pledge to tackle corruption.
