HONDURAS: Former leaders charged in corruption probe

Former president Juan Orlando Hernández (Partido Nacional, PN, 2014-2022) and his predecessor, Porfirio Lobo (PN, 2010-2014), are among eight former top officials to have been indicted for corruption. The charges are likely to be welcomed by President Xiomara Castro and her leftist ruling Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) which won the November 2021 election on a pledge to tackle corruption. However, the Libre government remains under pressure to deliver on its promise, amid perceived foot-dragging on a related campaign promise: the establishment of a new international commission against corruption and impunity in Honduras (CICIH) backed by the United Nations (UN). It is also under pressure fr failing to appoint a new attorney general by a 31 August deadline [WR-23-36].
