MEXICO: Aviation sector will continue to face challenges despite safety upgrade

Mexico recovered its Category 1 air safety status from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 14 September. This came over two years after the FAA downgraded the country to Category 2 citing concerns that Mexico’s federal civil aviation agency (Afac) did not have the necessary requirements to oversee the country’s air carriers in accordance with minimum international safety standards, which are set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the aviation arm of the United Nations (UN).
