Argentina’s ambassador to Bolivia, Ariel Bastero, confirmed in early September that his country’s contract to buy Bolivian natural gas would be modified to bring forward its end date. The contract was to end in 2026, but in a press conference Bastero stated that due to Bolivia’s admission that it would not be able to supply the amounts of gas specified in the contract, Argentina would look to end the agreement in mid-2024. He added that as a result Argentina would also be looking to accelerate its efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency. The country started work on a new gas pipeline in July 2022, and there are hopes that it could come into operation by mid-2024, in time for the peak demand of the southern hemisphere winter. The loss of the Argentinian supply contract will be of major concern to Bolivia, as Argentina has, along with Brazil, been a major export market for its natural gas for a number of years.
