MEXICO: The race to succeed López Obrador

Mexico may well elect its first female president in 2024. Both the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) and opposition Frente Amplio por México (FAM) have named women as their 2024 presidential candidates. For Morena, former Mexico City (CDMX) mayor Claudia Sheinbaum (2018-2023) will compete to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in June next year, while former senator Xóchitl Gálvez will have the difficult task of trying to remove Morena from power and bring the broad opposition coalition into government. Despite elections still being months away, both candidates have already indicated how they stand on key issues.
