CHILE: Confronting the legacy of coup and dictatorship

In September Chile’s President Gabriel Boric commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 11 September military coup which toppled Chile’s democratically elected former president Salvador Allende (1970-1973) and ushered in the 17-year dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. President Boric used the anniversary as a chance to invite parties of all political stripes to sign a joint declaration in defence of democracy. However, rather than rally under Boric’s calls for unity, the coup commemorations have inflamed culture wars and highlighted the extent of the country’s political polarisation.
