URUGUAY: Heber calls for DEA return amid drug spat

Uruguay’s interior minister, Luis Alberto Heber, did not mince his words this week when an imprisoned drug trafficker transferred to house arrest for purported ill health successfully made a run for it. Heber accused the justice system of undoing all the hard work of the police and public prosecutors by neglecting to consult the medical records of inmates adequately. Heber subsequently said his government was working for the return of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to help combat the actions of drug trafficking organisations in Uruguay more effectively.
