ARGENTINA: JxC extends winning streak

Winning is becoming a habit for the main right-of-centre opposition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC). For the third straight week, a JxC candidate swept to victory in a provincial election on 24 September. After taking Santa Fe and Chaco from the Kirchnerista wing of the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ), this time the JxC retained power in the western province of Mendoza. The JxC could not have set things up any better for its presidential candidate, Patricia Bullrich – and yet her progress to the second round is far from assured, let alone her winning. Javier Milei, the far-right populist presidential candidate, is outflanking her on the right and Sergio Massa, the economy minister and presidential candidate for the ruling Peronist coalition Unión por la Patria (UP), is making a concerted effort to occupy the centre ground, promising a government of national unity.
