In brief: Mexico urged to address US energy and steel concerns

* US Deputy Trade Representative (USTR) Jayme White has urged the Mexican government to address “serious concerns” raised by the US during ongoing consultations under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) regarding Mexico’s energy measures. He made his comments following a meeting with Mexico’s deputy foreign trade minister, Alejandro Encinas. The US and Canada had requested consultations under the USMCA in July 2022, stating that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s nationalist energy policies violated the terms of the agreement. A USTR statement adds that White also expressed concerns about the “recent surge” in US imports of certain steel and aluminium products from Mexico and the “lack of transparency” regarding Mexico’s steel and aluminium imports from third countries.
